Fridays Featuring…

July 29th, 2011

Hi everyone! I know it has been wayyy too long since my last post on here!  It has been neglected as other priorities haven gotten in the way! I do really want to make more of an effort to blog on here more often and will do my best to post more!

Last night, I attended the launch party for Halftone Media, a new business founded by the talented Liz Bradley, who also happens to be a pet and wedding photographer here in Ottawa!  The event was organized by Amy Karlin of Splendid Events, who you may remember as my first and last Fridays Featuring on this blog,  and took place at Luxe Bridal Boutique on Dalhousie! While I attended as an invitee, I also took the opportunity to snap a few pics so that I could feature Liz on Wedding Envy! In this picture from left to right–Marilou Moles, the every fashionable, ever social butterfly of Twenty York Street, Liz Bradley, founder of Halftone Media and Amy Karlin of Splendid Events

In this photo are Lisa and Madeleine, the founders and owners of Luxe Bridal. (Seeing all those gowns last night made me want to get married all over again–to the same guy of course! haha!)

About Halftone Media

Halftone Media is an album design service allowing professional photographers to outsource the design of wedding albums to Liz, who will do design work for them.  Some photographers really don’t enjoy designing albums, whether it’s because it’s just  not their thing, they lack the design know-how/tools or that they just find it too tedious. Whatever the reason, they would now be able to work with Liz to have her design their wedding albums.  Liz does not edit/process their photos, she simply creates timeless keepsakes that photographers can then offer to their clients.

How did it come about?

This company grew out of a love of designing albums and a conversation with a fellow photographer about workflow and the challenges that many wedding photographers had expressed about their frustration and dislike of album design.  Liz decided that she would really love to help professional photographers have more time to shoot and focus on running their businesses by offering custom album designs and so,  Halftone Media was born.  Here is just a sampling of the beautiful albums, thank you cards and CD cases/labels that Liz can create.

About Liz Bradley

Liz is a pet and wedding photographer in Ottawa, a graphic designer and in her own words “a self-proclaimed nerd who gets excited and captivated by great design.  I myself was curious about the meaning behind the company name!  Liz informed me that “Halftone” refers to the dots that are created in printing to make up the image in text–they are called halftones!   And here I thought there was some hidden musical reference!  ;)   If you want to know a bit more about Liz, read testimonials about her work and see some of her gorgeous albums on display, then just head over to her blog! Also, make sure to visit the website to check out the design layout options offered as well as pricing and FAQs.

Since I was in attendance as an invitee and not an official event photographer, I didn’t document the entire night. However, I did take a few shots in order to be able to feature Liz on this site.  Here is Amy tweeting live during the party to keep those who couldn’t attend in the loop!

Just two of many photographers in attendance–Vanessa Dewson and Anna Epp

Grace Mayelle of Within Essence Productions seen with Amy Karlin

Grace walked away with one of the raffle prizes too!

And well what launch party would be complete without your logo both visible AND edible!! Shout out to Geek Sweets for the delicious cupcakes!

Wonderful launch party Liz! You will no doubt be successful in this business endeavour as your eye for great design, your knowledge and skills in graphic design and your overall attention to detail translates into gorgeous album spreads that will be well loved by photographers and clients alike!  Congratulations!

Fridays Featuring…

March 18th, 2011

Happy Friday everyone! Happy to announce that this is WE’s first official Fridays featuring…post and the spotlight is on Amy Karlin of Splendid Events!

If you happened to catch the recent post about Rouge Ottawa, you already know a little bit about Amy as this is one the current events that she is working on–which will take place March 26th at Mansion NightClub!  You should definitely check it out, especially if you’re a bride looking for a unique wedding show experience!!

Last weekend, Amy and I met at Bridgehead for some hot tea and some chat time about how her business began and her philosophy on event planning!  After speaking with her, I can tell you that she’s one talented lady!  I have no doubt that she will experience nothing but success as she continues to organize simply Splendid Events!

Beginnings

When I asked Amy to tell me about how her company got started she told me that like most young girls, she hadn’t always dreamt of her wedding day but in fact it was the planning of her own wedding that sparked an interest in wedding and event planning. Amy planned her wedding down to the very last detail and while she took great pride in being a DIY bride and making sure all those personal touches were included, she felt some regret about not hiring an event planner when she realized that playing the role of both host and planner was too much to handle! Thus, Splendid Events came to be in July 2010 after having spent several years prior to starting her own businness planning a variety of corporate events.

Amy’s Philosophy

Splendid Events is all about creating events that are personal, meaningful and polished! “When all the details fit together, it just feels right” she adds.

As a wedding planner, Amy feels that all too often, people are afraid to challenge the traditions of the “cookie cutter” wedding where there tends to be a lot of repetition–that feeling of once you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all. Wedding are supposed to be a uniquely personal experience, so Amy works with her clients to create weddings that are a perfect reflection of the couple’s personailities, interests and story. Further to this, Amy does not work with banquet halls, rather she helps her clients choose venues that already evoke an ambiance or a feeling that would be a good fit with their individual styles, event goals and tastes.  Museums, wineries or restaurants are all examples of possible venues that Amy encourages her clients to consider. As she explains it, at a banquet hall, people often have to overcompensate with a lot of extra matierals to achieve a desired look/feeling, whereas with a location that already has a specific ambiance, it is much more natural and effortless.  One of Amy’s favourite restaurants in downtown Ottawa is eighteen, on York St.  She describes it as an old Heritage home that is still modern, with impeccable decor.  She also loves that decorate with fresh flowers everyday as they work with an in-house florist!

Making her mark!

As earlier mentioned, Rouge Ottawa is the current project being organized by Splendid Events and it is sure to be a hit among Ottawa brides and their girlfriends!  In addition to this, Amy has also been involved in Wed by Hand, Ottawa’s alternative wedding show, which features handmade, fair-trade and eco-friendly exhibitors!  The most recent show took place at the Glebe Community Center on February 6th, 2011! In addition to the variety of  exhibitors who were on hand to share their wisdom, Wed by Hand held DIY (do-it-yourself!) workshops, one of which Amy lead for the brides-to-be in attendance!

This year’s theme was “On a Shoestring” so Amy taught brides how to save money and stay sane during the planning process!  One of the things she talked about was how to create beautiful and meaningful centerpieces for less than $20 by creating non-floral arrangements or by incorporating succulents into the centerpiece. For example, if a couple has an interest in literature, she explains how using vintage and classic books arranged on the tables can not only save you money but more importantly, showcase the personality and passions of the couple.  She encourages couples to consider non-traditional options that have some personal significance to them.

Stay tuned for more tips on WE, as Amy will soon be featured as a guest blogger!

Amy is very passionate about supporting local vendors and teaches brides how to connect with artisans in the Ottawa area in an effort to support local economy.  Some of her favourite vendors include (but are not limited to) KoKo Chocolates, Geeksweets and Urbanite Jewelery to name a few!

Want to know more?

If you’d like to know more about Splendid Events, head on over to her website where you will be able to read more about Amy, the events and charities she’s involved in and acquire contact information if you’re looking to plan a wedding or an event! Glamourous Winter Wedding! (Submitted by Hope Photography)

March 16th, 2011

Well I’m so happy to announce that this is Wedding Envy’s first Real Wedding Submission sent in from Tricia Denomme of Hope Photography in Goderich, Ontario!

As the snow begins to melt and March brings us one step closer to Spring, now would be a great time to share this glamourous and gorgeous winter wedding, which took place on New Years Eve!  Is there anything prettier really, than a winter wedding!?

Sherri and Scott are our featured bride and groom and as you’ll see from the photos, they had a simply breathtaking venue that screams elegance!  The handsome couple began their special day with a “first look” photoshoot, where Tricia was on hand to capture the groom’s reaction to seeing his beautiful wife-to-be for the first time!  Afterwards, they exchanged vows and celebrated with a cocktail style reception with family and friends on New Years Eve at Arden Park Hotel in Stratford.

The beautiful Stratford White House, a historical mansion built in 1865, served as the perfect location for the photos taken on their special day! Whether inside or out, this spot doesn’t disappoint and with the pretty winter landscape surrounding them, there’s no denying that this is one stunning photo location!

“Hope” you enjoy and thank you Tricia for your beautiful submission!

Seriously, isn’t Sherri stunning!! Wow, simply breathtaking! And that dress…perfect for her!

Their “first look” ?

The colour palette for the bridal party was so sophisticated and classy!  I absolutely love how it complements the location! Such a perfect colour for a winter wedding with a touch of New Year’s Eve glam!

Love the pop of green and how it complements the purple so well!

Check out the bling on these babies!

A few from the ceremony

Congratulations Scott and Sherri!

Tuesday’s Trends–the Birdcage Veil

March 15th, 2011

The birdcage veil is a true fashion classic that never seems to go out of style!  There is just something so romantic and chic about this vintage veil and even the most modern brides can’t resist the charm and timeless elegance of these retro beauties!

The Birdcage veils feature a blusher, or a piece of netting that covers half of the face down to almost the chin. They are usually made from millinery veiling, which offers the stiffness needed to maintain their shape while providing a soft, open, non obscuring look. Usually secured with a clip, comb, or just bobby pins and often adorned with beautiful accessories such as flowers, brooches and feathers to name a few!

Be they vintage styles or more modern, these veils are sexy and chic!  Even better, they work with some many different hairstyles!  Short or long, wavy or curly, up or down; the birdcage veil always channels that old Hollywood glamour of the 40′s while still looking modern and fresh!

More and more brides are choosing the birdcage veil as an alternative to a traditional long veil and with the many options for embellishing them,  they make a glamorous statement piece that is a perfect reflection of the bride’s personality and style!  Have a look at the photos I’ve selected, you’ll see what I mean!

Rouge Ottawa–Ottawa’s Ultimate Bachelorette Party!

March 14th, 2011

Today I had the pleasure of meeting with Amy Karlin, founder of Splendid Events , an Ottawa-based event planning company, specializing in weddings, corporate events, and social events.  WE will be doing a full feature on Splendid Events soon, but this post is about Rouge Ottawa, one of the current events being organized by Amy along with;

What is Rouge Ottawa?

A red-carpet affair for all brides-to-be and their BFF’s at one of Ottawa’s hottest clubs,  Mansion Nightclub!  Rouge is a chance for the ladies to get glammed up and hit the town for a wedding show experience like no other!

Socializing, not selling!

What makes Rouge different from other bridal shows you ask? As Amy describes it, Rouge “un-wedding show” meaning that while vendors will be present, the trade show environment ( which is characterized by booths and business cards!) will not be a part of the evening!  Brides will have the opportunity to see potential vendors in action as the event unfolds! Vendors will be walking the walk and not just talking the talk! Of course they will be willing and able to answer any questions that brides may have, but the main purpose is to socialize, not sell.

Who else is involved in Rouge Ottawa?

In addition to the four sponsors listed above, Rouge has lined up some of the best wedding businesses in the city who can’t wait to SHOW you what they’re all about! Some of these vendors include

If this doesn’t scream ULTIMATE BACHELORETTE PARTY,  then what does!?  What could be better than being treated like a celebrity for the evening all while getting know some of the amazing local talent in Ottawa’s wedding industry!

Unbelievable Prizes!

Throughout the evening, brides will have the chance to purchase raffle tickets for a chance to win a number of AMAZING prize packs, each valued at over $500!!

Tiffany with a touch of Tangerine!

March 10th, 2011

All I have to say is love!!  Tiffany blue and just a pop of tangerine is super modern, spirit lifting and vivacious! This colour scheme is totally adaptable to various seasons and themes! For instance, these colours together conjure up images of seaside weddings on the beach in my mind but I could see it for spring too! I initially started my search for robin egg blue, a fave of mine and ended up getting a bunch of  Tiffany blue items (pretty much the same colour). I was thinking of pairing it with light yellow but came across an image of a gorgeous array of orange flowers as the centerpieces!  So, I decided to incorporate a splash of tangerine and voilà!  I ended up having so many images that I made two separate boards and combined them!  I tried to pick the best, and many were left out, so I hope you like this beautiful splash of colour!

Also, during my search, I came across this beautiful post on Project Wedding , which I thought I’d share because the clementines are just too cute against those pretty blue table linens! Don’t you just love lovely?

Tuesday Trends–Vintage Stationary

March 8th, 2011

One of the first statements you make about the kind of wedding you are planning is through the stationary!  Be it save the dates, wedding invites, the reply cards and the many thank you notes you’ll be writing out, pretty stationary always makes a lasting impression and an even better first impression!

I came across an image of vintage stamps (see the collage below) from Anthropologie and instantly came up with the idea for today’s trend: vintage stationary!  And of course, vintage touches all around if this is the theme/concept you’re going with!

In today’s day and age, we are so technoolgy driven, which isn’t a bad thing, but there is just something so endearing about a good old fashioned hand mailed letter, card or invitation!  I absolutely love vintage mail–the colour, the penmanship and who doesn’t like brown paper packages tied up with string?  Enjoy this beautiful collection!   (I absolutely love that lace sticky tape from a company called Cox&Cox How awesome is that?!)  Also, I want to make sure that photo credit is given to Mandy Lynne Photography for the mailbox image! Lovely!

In keeping with your love letters theme, you may want to get creative with your reply cards! I actually did something very similar, only instead of using post cards as reply cards, I hand stamped blank post cards and left them out for guests to fill out with marriage advice and/or best wishes at the reception.

When it comes to a love letter theme, I may be biased as it was the theme for our wedding!  I was a total DIY bride, so every single invitation was hand made, handstamped and embossed!  My original intention was not to blog about our wedding, since it was almost 4 years ago this summer, but then I started to get a little nostalgia when I came across the vintage letters!  It reminded me of the hours and hours I (with the help of amazing family and friends) put into making all the invitations, programs, menus, place cards etc by hand!  I went back into my archives and found a bunch of pics that I took during the process (pre-dslr days, so excuse the quality, I salvaged them the best I could!) and decided I’d add them to this post for fun!  It is a shame that many of the details were not professionally captured the way they could have/should have been by our wedding photogapher (who shall remain nameless) but I’ve made up what was missed the best I could!  So for old times sake and because I have never really blogged about all the details that I poured my heart into years ago…

We decided on this letter opener as a favour.  It also had some significance to us (long story short, I wrote a letter to my love, he ripped through it when trying to use a letter opener for the first time haha!  Thankfully, he was still able to read it! ) They arrived like this

but I wanted to add my own personal touch and stick with the theme, so I wrapped them all up in parcel paper, tied with string and even had a postmark stamp made with our names and wedding date to look official!  The thank you tag was also punched and stamped by  yours truly!  (I took this picture today just for this post!)

These next few are older shots from a point and shoot–kind of grainy, but it’s the best I could do to rescue them!

The final product, minus the bow!  I was just seeing how it looked, but ended up just using the band seen above! All the cardstock was handstammped and embossed (ie-the script you see was handstamped on all 200 invitations!)

And while I was very happy with them in the end, it was A LOT of work, needing A LOT of supplies!  (and time–I lived, breathed and dreamt wedding that year!)

A few more details–all place cards were also handmade and included a personalized love quote

I saw the Tears of Joy (tissue holders!) were a DIY trend that year on WeddingBells (spent a disgusting amount of time on those forums! haha!) and decided to make them (because I wasn’t making enough already…looking back, I wonder what I was thinking!)

Table No.’s

Programs–also handmade, you guessed it!

and even the menus!   (this pic was taken by a friend at the wedding)

Anyway, you get the idea! Hope you enjoyed taking a trip down memory lane with me!!

Raspberry is all the Rage!

March 4th, 2011

Spring is most definitely in the air!  I am so excited to be posting my first inspiration board or pretty palette, I should say!

Raspberry seems to be all the rage right now and I couldn’t be more pleased as that is one of my colours! I absolutely love raspberry and have had visions of this colour palette dancing in my head all week!  Soft Pink  and Raspberry with a hint of apple green…sigh, so lovely!

There is just something so sweet, endearing and pretty about these colours together!  These bold brights scream fun-loving and modern and are sure to make beautiful eye-candy! Not to mention the fun you could have planning your wedding details around these colours! They all contrast so beautifully!

This is my first inspiration board!  I’ve been admiring them for years and am happy to have finally made my own!   Hope you enjoy…sending spring vibes your way!!

Wedding Envy’s First Real Wedding!

March 2nd, 2011

As this is my official re-luanch of Wedding Envy on my new WordPress blog (Theme by Tofurious ) and in an effort to get the ball rolling, I am going to use some of my own photos from a wedding this past summer to hopefully give you an idea of what I hope to showcase on this blog! As a side note, I would like to give a HUGE shout out to Danella Miller , who was simply amazing to me!  To say that I experienced some technical difficulties getting this blog off the ground is an understatement, but thanks to the kindness of a complete stranger, Wedding Envy is ready to go and I couldn’t have done it without her help.  She really put in so much time and effort to help me out and was the best tech support I’ve ever had, truthfully, the BEST! You should definitely check out her work, she is extraordinarily talented!! Thank you Danella for being so amazing!!

Mike & Amy Tie the Knot! (Ottawa, Ontario)

Mike and Amy, had a beautiful ceremony and reception at St. Philip’s Parish in Richmond on a perfect August day! The weather was gorgeous–sunny and just the right amount of heat!  The bride and groom, along with the bridal party and family had the formals done just around the corner in this hidden gem, the quiet gardens.  Actually, it really is hidden and it really is a gem of a location!  Purple was the colour of the day and was seen throughout!

The ladies looked ravishing!

The men cleaned up well too!

A candid kiss caught amongst the chaos of congratulations!  (that’s a tongue twister!)

(Here is where I will list the vendor information that accompanies the submissions.  I’m waiting on a reply from the bride, so will update that soon. but was eager to get these photos up and start blogging!)

Well that’s it for now!  Hope you enjoyed this first sample post!  I look forward to showcasing many more gorgeous weddings!

Amy
